Mirinda Carfrae, Triple Ironman World Champion

Defending Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae had planned to somehow produce something even better than last year’s masterpiece.

Mirinda Carfrae’s third Ironman World Championship victory on Saturday in Kona, Hawaii, didn’t look like a possibility at the T2 (transition from bike to run), Carfrae exited with more than 14 minutes behind then race leader Daniela Ryf. Carfrae broke her own run course record, set last year, when she moved past Ryf in the marathon and giving her the third Ironman world title of her career.

Two years after launching its line of innovative triathlon apparel, Castelli was again worn to victory at the pinnacle event of the sport. Carfrae wore the scorpion to a stunning victory, with 2013 Champion Frederick Van Lierde finishing 8th on the day, and a host of other professionals and countless age groupers relying on the technical advantages of Castelli tri gear to achieve their personal bests.

“The input and feedback of the sport’s top professionals has been crucial in the development
of our entire range of triathlon apparel.”

“We couldn’t be happier for Rinny,” said Castelli Brand Manager Steve Smith.  “The input and feedback of the sport’s top professionals has been crucial in the development of our entire range of triathlon apparel.  Having Rinny repeat in Castelli as Ironman World Champion is testament to our success in creating the fastest, most comfortable triathlon gear in the world.”

It was an outstanding day for Carfrae, who wore the Castelli Free Donna TRI top and shorts and was crowned Ironman World Champion for the third time. In brutally windy and humid conditions, she overcame a 14-minute deficit on the run leg to claim a thrilling victory, setting another new women’s run record of 2:50:26 for a total time of 9:00:55.  Carfrae becomes just the fourth woman in Ironman history to win three World Championships.

2013 men’s Champion Frederick Van Lierde orchestrated a great race but came up against a stunning Sebastian Kienle and was slowed by side stitches through the Energy Lab that probably cost him the 4 minutes from another podium finish, but still finished 8th after taking advantage of the aero benefits of his Castelli Free TRI Suit .

Many other professionals and countless age groupers were relying on the technical advantages of Castelli tri gear to achieve their personal bests in KONA.
