Sue Butler (River City Bicycles-Ridley) left a strong impression on the local women’s field on Sunday, opening a gap early on and holding it all the way to a solo victory in front of a boisterous home crowd. The Portland-based pro racer took the coveted win at the iconic Alpenrose Dairy, which hosts the season-opener of the Cross Crusade, one of the nation’s largest cyclocross series.

Two-time US Cyclocross National Champion, Ryan Trebon, pulled on the Castelli Series Leader Jersey last weekend after a strong 2nd-place finish at Starcrossed in Seattle. The 4-race series, Cross After Dark, kicked off the cyclocross season a week ago in Las Vegas, which saw Trebon place 5th overall in a field of international talent.

Castelli got rave reviews at Eurobike and Interbike for its SANREMO SPEEDSUIT and TRIATHLON collection, both new for Spring 2012.
Five months after Johan Van Summeren (Garmin-Cervélo) soloed to a career-best win in Paris-Roubaix, the same type of SpeedSuit was worn by the Italian national road team competing in the road world championships in Copenhagen last week.
The SanRemo SpeedSuit, jersey-and-shorts combo, effectively enables riders to wear a skinsuit in road races and thus gain an aerodynamic advantage. Testing shows that at 40km/h, the jersey saves between twelve and fifteen watts of energy when compared to a standard clothing combination. It is, it says, worth 45 seconds in time savings. Pulling on a World Road Championships Rainbow Jersey must be one of the greatest feelings ever! But to do it twice…well!
Dressed in Castelli colors, Italy’s Giorgia Bronzini claimed her second women’s elite World Championship road title in a row. The Italian beat Marianne Vos (Netherlands) and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Germany) to the line.

GETTING READY FOR TOMORROW: Castelli joined the Italian National men’s team this morning when testing the Worlds course for the last time. The Azzuri were all over the SanRemo Speed Suit. “Its the best cycling pieces I’ve ever worn”, said Oscar Gatto and Manuel Quinziato.
The Italian riders will not only be reaping the aero benefits of the SanRemo Speed Suit tomorrow, the Gabba jersey will be protecting them from the wind-chill, and still give them the aero advantage during the first part of the race.

This year’s World Championship has been described as a sprinter’s course, but the team manager of the Italian national squad, Paolo Bettini has warned that any eventual winner on Sunday will have to be far more than just a fast finisher.
“Its going to be a a long and fast race, you’ll have to fight for your postion to avoid crashes in the many snap corners.” Matteo Tossato said.
